When designer and well-renowned artist / photographer Frank Maddocks reached out to us about collaboration on the sculptural centerpiece for melodic metalcore artist ONI, we jumped at the chance to craft a detailed digital figure modeled after a traditional Japanese "Oni" mask.
After exploring iterations on ornament and material details, we went to work experimenting with dynamic lighting styles that could give the mask kinetic energy as three-dimensional still life vignettes. That led to a series of song visualizers executed as motion graphics loops, real-time audioreactive environments, and live-action + vfx-based music videos.
When both the artist and creative partner lead the conversation with "trust in the process", we find ourselves doing the most interesting and fulfilling work — this project is a perfect example of that.
